I. SCOPE
This policy establishes the membership and responsibilities of the University Council on
Graduate Study.
II. POLICY
The Associate Provost for Graduate Studies serves as chairman of the University Council
on Graduate Study. Membership on the Council includes:
- Twenty regular members of the Graduate Faculty, distributed in proportion to the
number of graduate faculty members in each school. (One for each 100 members,
and/or a fraction of 100.)
- Six graduate students, chosen in accordance with procedures established for that
purpose by the Graduate and Professional Student Association.
The Council is comprised of three standing subcommittees:
- The Subcommittee for Graduate Student Academic Affairs
- The Subcommittee for Annual Reviews
- The Subcommittee for the Evaluation of Graduate Programs
The chairman of the Council and the Chairs of each of the standing subcommittees
constitute the Council’s Executive Committee.
The responsibilities of the Council are:
- To develop basic standards, regulations, and policies applicable for graduate
instruction and research
- To review, evaluate, and make recommendations to the Provost and to the President,
concerning proposals for new post baccalaureate degree and certificate programs
(excluding the first professional degrees offered by Law, Medicine, and Dental Medicine)
- To keep informed of the quality of graduate work throughout the University, through
annual reports from the faculty councils and committees of the graduate degree and
certificate granting programs; and, when necessary to conduct its own review of such
programs
- To identify and promote creative new approaches to graduate education
