PLUS Loans

The University receives the proceeds from PLUS Loans by electronic funds transfer (EFT) or by paper check. The procedure for processing the funds to the student's account depends on the manner by which the funds are received.

Plus proceeds from lenders participating in the PHEAA electronic funds transfer (EFT) process are transmitted to the University electronically.

  • These funds cannot be transferred to the University or processed to the student's account unless the student is registered at least a half time, and the parent borrower has authorized the loan to be disbursed electronically.
  • Authorization for electronic disbursement can be given by completing the appropriate section of the PLUS loan application.
  • The University will notify parent borrowers, by mail, if the electronic transfer is not authorized and/or the student is not registered at least half time.
    • The notification will include a Borrower's Authorization Statement (BAS) that, when completed and returned to the University, will authorize the electronic transfer.
  • Funds will be disbursed and processed to the student account according to federally mandated time guidelines.
    • The University will notify the student, by mail, that the funds have been applied to the student account.
    • A refund check, made payable to the parent borrower, will be mailed to the parent's address when PLUS proceeds exceed the student's charges.
PLUS proceeds from lenders not participating in the PHEAA (EFT) process are disbursed by paper check, made co-payable to the parent borrower and the University of Pittsburgh.
  • The student must be registered at least half time before the parent borrower is eligible to receive the funds.
  • PLUS loan checks will be endorsed and mailed to the parent upon receipt.
  • The parent borrower is expected to negotiate the check and remit any amount due by personal check.
  • The University will notify students, not registered at least half time, that the parent's check has been received, but cannot be mailed to the parent until the student is registered at least half time.
  • The University is required to return PLUS Loan checks to the lender within 30 days, if the student is not registered or the parent borrower cannot be located.
