Study Abroad Refund Issues
The following information is designed to help you avoid unnecessary financial complications while you are out of the country. If you are expecting loans or scholarships to help offset your study abroad expenses, please be aware of the following regulations:
1. The schedule for the disbursement of Title IV funds, including, but not limited to,
Stafford Loans, is based on the start of the term at the University of Pittsburgh and
may not correspond with the payment established by the host university.
2. Aid may be disbursed in one of two forms:
• Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT): The funds are disbursed directly to the University of Pittsburgh and the funds will be automatically posted to your student account.
• Paper Check: The funds are disbursed and mailed to the University in the form of a paper check, which will require your endorsement before it can be processed and refunded.
3. The University of Pittsburgh cannot forward checks out of the country, therefore,
please verify which type of disbursement you will be expecting, and make the
appropriate arrangements.
• If you expect your aid to come in the form of a paper check, and you will be out of the country when the check is disbursed, you must make arrangements for someone residing in the United States to endorse your checks for you.
• A Special Power of Attorney is required for the University to legally release your check to a third party for endorsement. This is a legal document that must be signed by you in the presence of a Notary Public. You may acquire the necessary forms and instructions from Student Accounting and Billing, located at 100 Thackeray Hall or you can download them at http://www.bc.pitt.edu/students/arSPA.pdf.
4. Make sure you have a Direct Deposit Account in PittPAY so your refund is
deposited in your bank account 2 - 3 business days from the date it is processed on
your student account. To establish a Direct Deposit account: www.my.pitt.edu >
Student Services> PittPAY> select Direct Deposit and follow the instructions.
