Tuition & Fees

Tuition

Tuition rates are based on whether or not you are a permanent resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A higher tuition rate is charged to non-residents.

  • Higher tuition rate is charged to non-residents. If you have lived in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to enrollment at any college or university in the state, you may be eligible for reduced tuition rates.
  • To qualify, you must also be a citizen of the United States or have a U. S. immigrant/permanent resident visa.
  • If you are under 21 years of age, you are presumed to have the same domicile as your parents.

Copies of the detailed "University of Pittsburgh Tuition Eligibility Guidelines" are available upon request in the Student Appeals Office, located in G-12 Thackeray Hall.

If you are admitted to the University but do not automatically qualify for reduced tuition rates, you may petition for the resident rate by supplying additional information to be reviewed by the Student Appeals Coordinator. To be effective for a particular term, petitions must be submitted within the first 30 calendar days of the term or 15 calendar days of the session.

NOTE: Due dates will not be extended and late payment or late registration fees will not be waived for any reasons related to the determination of eligibility for reduced tuition.

Should you change your domicile from Pennsylvania to another state you must promptly give written notice to the University. In addition, if you are under 21 years of age you must report any change in your parents' or legal guardians' address.

If you are found eligible for resident tuition rates at the time of your initial classification due to an error, you are subject to retroactive reclassification as a non-resident and are responsible for the payment of all related tuition and fees.

You can contact the Student Appeals Office by telephone at (412) 624-7610 or by email at: PAtuitioneligibility@bc.pitt.edu.

Full-time vs. Part-time

The University of Pittsburgh is comprised of several academic centers and tuition rates vary among them.

  • Undergraduate students registered for 12 to 18 credits in the Fall and Spring Terms are regarded as full-time students, and are assessed the current undergraduate "flat" tuition rate for their academic center.
  • Undergraduate students registered for 11.5 or fewer credits are considered part-time, and are billed on a per-credit basis.
  • Graduate students registered for 9 to 15 credits in the Fall and Spring Terms are regarded as full-time students, and are assessed the current graduate "flat" tuition rate for their academic center.
  • Graduate students registered for 8.5 or fewer credits are considered part-time, and billed on a per-credit basis.
  • Students will be charged per credit for each credit exceeding the maximum full-time credit limit.
  • All students are billed on a per-credit basis in the Summer Term with the exception of students in the Dental Hygiene Certificate Program; Katz Full-time MBA, Flex MBA, MBA/MS and EMBA Programs; Cooperative Engineering Program; and the Accelerated Nursing Program .

Like tuition, the required or mandatory fees such as the Student Activity Fee, Student Health Fee, Computer and Network Services Fee, and Security, Safety and Transportation Fee are assessed according to student status. Amounts and types of fees assessed depend upon each student's academic center or campus and whether the student is undergraduate or graduate, and is registered full or part-time.

Thesis Fees

Thesis fees cover the cost of electronic processing and microfilming a Master's Thesis or Doctoral Dissertation.

  • A fee of $20.00 is assessed for Master's students.
  • A fee of $81.50 for Doctoral students.

The Student Payment Center will provide you with two receipts, one for your records, the other to present with your paperwork.
